visa Mauritania

Can you buy a visa for Mauritania when you cross the border coming from Mali (either Adel Bagrou or Medd Alah)? We have French and Dutch passports.

Hi,

I am looking for the same information, so look forward to your replies. However I bought my visa for Mauritania at the border when entering from Morroco last year, so I am hoping to be able to do the same again from Mali. I understand that it takes two days at the embassy in Bamako.

I am driving a Defender 110 300 Tdi up from Mali myself, and hoping to be in Mauritania around mid July. If you are goingup do you fancy driving up together, perhaps doing the Tidjika to Atar route?

Hope to hear from you,

Paul

We are leaving Togo in the middle of July and will not be entering Mauritania before the beginning of August.
I hear different stories about the visa. It seems no problem for French passport holders, but for other European countries it might not be possible. I will try to call the embassy in Bamako, maybe they can give more info. Will keep you informed.

I don't know about the border, we got ours for the return trip at the french embassy in Ouagaougou. Same day service!
The visa was half handwritten but passed without incident at Ayoun el Atrous.
I read that most french embassies in the ECOWAS can provide this service in the absence of a Mori embassy.
Also heard of people applying at the Mori embassy in Bamako and waiting weeks because NKT has to approve and they never do...
happy trails
Luke

Thanks for the info! Very useful. I called the Mauritanian embassy in Bamako (tel +223-2214815, quartier Hippodrome, next to restaurant Monte Christo) and they said it is not possible to buy a visa at the border. At the embassy it takes one day if you deliver your passport between 9 and 10am, then at 2pm the same day you can pick it up. You need 2 pictures and a copy of your passport.

Hi,

I can confirm the information above.
Last year I got a Mauritanian visa in Bamako in just 2 hours. Got there near 12:00 and received the visa after lunch.
But they charged extra for the "swift service" (not much really).

Cheers,
José
