Visa for Mali

I'm planning on driving my Land Rover down from the UK to Timbuktu and going to the Festival in the Desert, leaving 16th of Dec back on 3rd of Feb 2006. My route is Morocco, Mauritania, Mali. I've seen lots of reference to the Visa for Mauritania either at Cassa or at the border but not much advice on a Visa to Mali other than I will need one. The advice seems to be get Visa's on the way down but both Morocco or Mauritania don't seem to have Mali Embassies listed and I have seen references to not being able to get them at the border or that it might be possible. Any body got any advice?

Gerry,
You can get the Visa at the Mali Embassy in Noukchott, Mauritania, leave your passport there overnight and pick it up the next day - normally. Its on the North side of town, The adress is in most decent guide books.
cheers
Grif

I heard that you need either a carnet de passage or a flight ticket to get a visa for Mali. Is it true? Or can you get the visa in Nouktachot or Rabat without carnet or reservation?

Thanks,
Patryk

Seems to be some circular confusion going on!

Recent travellers have posted that no carnet is needed for Mauri or Mali and that visas are available on a turn-up-and-buy basis at the border (for Mauri) and at Noukachott and Rabat for Mali.

Anyone with recent experience like to confirm ?

are those prices 20 euros/25 euros for single-entry visas or multi-entry?

we are planning a similar trip, probably by van, leaving around the same time, but intending to go down to ghana and pick up some friends before heading back up to timbuktu for the festival.

got my Mali visa in Rabat 6 months ago, but it took 24 hours. Also, give them the correct money as you rarely get change. Got my Mauri visa on the border. Got my Carnet stamped for Mauri (I had to ask), but didn't bother in Mali as I couldn't find anyone to stamp it at the border (didn't get my passport stamped either).

The confusion is probably because things don't always happen the same way twice at borders.

We got our visa for Mali today in Brussels. They don't ask for a carnet, and the cost was 30€ (1 month, single entry).
They only ask a contact adress in Mali, for which we took the adress of a hotel in Bamako (that we will not even visit at all).
The waiting delay was 4 working days, but no other problems at all.

Got my visa this morning at the Malian Embassy, Nouakchott. Single entry, 30 days; 2 photos, 2 hours, 2500UM.

Hi Gerry,
I just read your email about travelling to Mali for the music festival in January. My partner and I will be on the same route as you. We will be traveling from Morroco. We are planning to go by land and wanted to ask you about how long you think it will take to make the trip. We also thought it might be worth a try to see if you have any room for a couple of Canadians who would share gas costs. I don't think we would travel back with you though as we would be going down to Ghana afterwards. Also, do you know if we need to buy tickets anywhere.
Let us know.
Thanks
Teresa

probbably too late .. but definitely you can get your Mali Visa at the border. and cheaper than in any Embassy.

Actually , in this Secuence .

Morocco ->Mauritania -> Mali -> Burkina -> Niger

you can get always the visa at the border .. on the spot. Don't bother with Embassies which may be closed , or on weekends , or on god-knows-what . Borders are always open , and they will be happy to help you with the visa.

Javier.
