Urgent: carnet for Mauritania

Hi guys,
just went to Mauri embassy in Brussels to ask the visa info.
They mention that if you wanna go with car. Then you must show them the carnet de passage en douane to get visa.
So the question is:
does Mauri boder customs asks this doc when you cross the border from Morocco with a car?

Not unless they have changed the rules and you are the first to find out.

Embassies commonly dont know what is going on in the country re: overland.

Just say you are going without a car - taking taxi/bus...

Hi,

We did it in the end of January and they only check de Visa on the passport and we needed to show the car documents. If the car documents are in your name you don´t need any other documents.

I red on a Dutch forum (senegal.pagina.nl)that the minister of finance of Mauretanie is talking about a carnet.

Since the bordercrossing between Morocco and Mauritania became official in 2002 the Mauritanian embassy in Brussels started asking for a carnet de passage for people driving by car. But the custumofficers still give you the engagement d'honneur for 10 euros. You can get youre visa without carnet de passage with the help of visabureaus. But they wil charge you almost 30 euro's on top of the 20 euro that the embassy is charging. So thats almost 50 euro, the same amount as that you will have to pay on the border in case you dont have a visa. If you're able to forge a reservation formular for a flight to Nouakchott and fill in that you will arrive in Nouakchott, you get you're visa for 20 euros in Brussels.

Indeed, the minister of finance of Mauritania suggested last year on the radio that his country would ask for a carnet for foreign cars older dan five years. just like in Senegal. But there was a lot of rumour about this proposal. So it is not likely that this is going to happen soon.

a uh, after you pay the tips to those customs officers. will they not stamp something like "entry by car"?


anyway, i will go to make a reservation for the visa. then cancel it.

indeed my plan is driving to mauri. and sell my jeep, then stay some days long. finally come back by plane. So watever, i need to book a return ticket in advanced.

For all the messing about to save perhaps 20EUR, I don't bother!!

Skip a McDonalds on the way down through Europe and save your cash that way?!

Be very carefull selling your car in Mauritania! Dont agree on any proposal in wich you are asked to drive your car to Rosso or Diama. Even if they pay you in advance, you will end up in serieus problems when the custums find money that you didn't declare on the border. And it's very likely that your car seller is collaborating with them. Even when he is an gendarme- custom- or policeofficer. The only recommanded way is to do it officialy, including the custums and a notary. Each way, with or without a visa, the customs will stamp your passport.

Marius, do you happen to know what the rate of duty is in Mauritania, when it's all officially done, and whether it's on the new car value/ the car's current value?
