Uk Landrover to Egypt under temporary permit
 

Hiya all
I hear its possible to temporarily take a UK Landrover into Egypt for 6 months, then take it over the Jordanian border and thence back in for another six months, and so on... can anyone confirm this? I was in Sinai last week, Siwa the week before, Bahareya and Farafra before that and I am desperate to get my Landy out here but I know the customs lot in Egypt slap silly money taxes on for fll-time personal imports... help! Yes, you can keep the vehicle here for 6 months but you have to get it out of the country for another 6 months before getting it back in again. I you have a spouse or someone you trust with you then you can transfer the vehicle ownership to his/her and you can bring it back immidiatly in their name.

How would you suggest I go about it? I am intending coming from UK this summer via Nuweiba vehcle ferry - shall I just turn up?

All you have to do is show up with the carne. You’ll be able to get the visa at the border but better confirm this with your Egyptian embassy to be on the safe side.

Thanks a lot AB... I have a residency for Egypt in my passport - do you think this might be a problem in getting a 6 month visa for my vehicle? (I live in Ma'adi)

Since foreigners with the proper carne get 6 month, I don’t see a reason for a resident to have less privileges. I will ask for you though to be on the safe side. Also as I mentioned before it’s a good idea to ask the local Egyptian embassy. Sometimes the Egyptian government makes special arrangements for different countries’ residents in return for favors or AID.

I would be extremly intersed to hear about the solution you found for this issue.

Have the same problem. What to drive 4x4 in Egypt but refuse to pay the taxes for the 4x4 cars.

By the way, does anyone know a good 4x4 car rental in Cairo, where one can rent the car without driver?

I know a couple of rental places that rent 4x4. But bear in mind that renting 4x4 is mainly a touristic activity in Egypt and hence very expensive. How does $150 a day sound?

As for a solution do enter a 4x4 without paying taxes? Read my post above: Assuming you're a foreigner, you can get a car in for 6 months. After that take out of the country and get it back name under another name.

How can one 'refuse to pay' another countries taxes, they will run the country how they feel, it's theirs and one is always a guest.

You can either chose not to take your car, and hire as A.B. suggests, or get a Carnet for yours if you are not staying for long.

There used to be a problem importing Diesel engined vehicles into Egypt. Is this still the case?

As regards importing diesels, it seems to be ok these days.

I have had wildly differing accounts of how easy it is to do this.... I have been told by an expat Brit here that one must pay road tax for every month the vehicle is in Egypt, this works out at about a thousand UK sterling a year, as well as vast baksheesh at the border.

I am in two minds... AB's posts make me think 'yes' but expats out here really are putting me off. My Landy is about all I have and I dont want to risk her at the hands of unpredictable bureaucrats

The problems with diesel engines are not relevant to you guys bringing your cars in Egypt. It’s relevant to an Egyptian buying a diesel car and registering it in Egypt. For a period they were not allowed (some models) since they were thought to be harmful to the environment. That’s not really an issue any more as far as I know.

Here’s a laugh: Oddly enough, some diesel cars are not allowed to be purchased by Egyptians (unless you know somebody big) simply because of their long-range tanks and efficiency. For example the turbo diesel Toyota land cruiser is banned since smugglers use it successfully to cross the Libyan and Sudanese border. Yeah I know, a stupid solution to a problem, but what can I say: Welcome to Egypt Mr.!

LRN, I gather you’re in Egypt at the moment? Why don’t you go to the auto club and the customs at the airport to find out for real? I think it would be best. I can ask around to find out where to go exactly if you’re interested.
