Can anyone recommend a good tour operator based in the UAE - (Dubai) for desert safaris.

You have several to choose from.

Arabian Adventures are the biggest and are the inbound tourism branch of Emirates Airlines.

Net Tours are another reasonable company, as are Orient Tours.

These companies all do safari drives. If you want self-drive you have to go to other companies such as 4x4 Desert Extreme, who are part of the Al Tayer Motors group (Land Rover & Ford agents for Dubai) or Off-Road Emirates.

Let me know if you want to find out more.

I cant recommend this highly enough, we hired a car form Al Tayers hire car company last december, it was suposed to be a new disco but they ended up giving us a freelander, it only cost 40 odd quid a day. I have deleted my emails from them so dont have the contact anymore but get onto Al Tayers and they should sort you out.
We ended up going out to fosil rock near dubai then out to hatta with a couple of lads of the Land Rover Enthusiast forum and had a ball, the freelander suffered a bit from ground clearance, but served us well for a few days. The only thing I really wanted to do but missed out on was going to Liwa, but if your lucky Jon maybe able to give you a bit of a giuded tour out there.

PS Jon congrats on the Pajero test article, there were some great photos from Sharky, especially getting recovered by Streaky in his disco.

Col,

Thanks for the kind words! When are you back to the UK or have you already gone? Alex Chwetzoff asking me to try and get your E-Mail address, as he wanted to know if you needed any more info about the drive to the UK. Please drop me a note at the usual address.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
