Tyre fitter in Tunis, and ferries.

Hi folks.

I am very lazy, and am planning to get somoeone to fit my Mich Deserts in Tunis. I'm thinking it might be cheaper than getting it done in Genoa. Anyone done this? Should I just do it myself at the first campsite?

Also, is it possible to just buy the ferry tickets to Tunis at the port? I don't trust the online booking sites - they all seem wobbly - and I don't want to pay an agent surcharge here in London.

Cheers.

It must be possible to buy tickets at Genoa some place - there's not an office/agency in the port as far as I recall but there will be one nearby (if Marseille or Tunis are any comparison).
You won't save anything as all tickets are sold at the same price - if CTN sell direct they just make more.
You could become a Tunisian - they get a cheaper rate:

Or you could ask the captain if you can work your passage (as I planned to do in '81, rather naively), but it will probably end up being the other way round...

You'd save a couple of quid getting tyres changed in Tunis and a couple more DIY.

Plenty of workshops in La Goulette once you arrive in Tunis. Just ask. Getting the tyres fitted would be relatively cheap. Choose a specialist with the right kit. Rather than an over eager guy with a metal bar and a lump hammer.

Out of interest where did you buy your Deserts?

Thanks ctc and Chris - you've both really put my mind at rest. I got my Deserts from Watling Tyres in Catford, who keep them in stock, as they look after some Rally riders. Having been quoted £160 for a mostly knackered pair, I thought £55 front and £80 rear wasn't bad (+ vat though). Walked in and walked out 3 mins later with these beasts!

Hope I have not mislead you, but I thought you had a 4x4 not a motor bike.

Cant vouch for Tunisian bike know how, I have no experience.
