Tunisia - transit

Hi folks,

Anyone in Tunisia now? In couple of weeks time I need to transit from Tunis to Ras Ajdir. I wonder whether thera are any special problems getting to the Libyan border. How about leaving Tunis harbour, any signs of banditry on the highway toward east of the country? Any update appreciated.

I was told yesterday

"... my friends arrived hassle free in Tozeur today.
Some villages were guarded by local, armed militia which were friendly.
Border should be open from 07-17h...."

I believe they were heading from Tunis to Algeria, but it could have been the other way round, so the tricky bit lies ahead.

Thank you guys. I think the tricky part is Tunis itself and we need to wait until we find someone who wnet through the harbour. As to the weapon, I will leave my handy bazooka at home

I'm currently in Libya (Fezzan) and hoping to leave on 28th, or 29th Jan. via Raj Ajer, then up to Tunis for the sailing to Marseille on 30th. I'll be watching this forum with more interest than usual! My initial thoughts are that 10 days is a long time in Tunisian politics right now and the last person they will want to harm is a 'tourist' in an old Landy, so I am concerned, but not worried. Toby

Hi Toby, since you are inside, could you ask your guide if he could confirm that another overlanders are comming through the border? He should be able to verify that with other guides. If they come in then there will not be a problem to leave Tunisia either.

I don't actually have a guide as I'm, sort of, working here, but I'm keeping my ear to the ground. Far too early for me to make real enquiries in such a rapidly changing situation. I'll ask on 28th in Tripoli and take it from there. I'm currently way down south and only have internet access occasionally.

Just for information purposes : the Dutch Foreign Office is advising people not to travel to Tunisia until further notice.

I just returned from Tunisia - we crossed the border from Libya on 16 and we drove to Hammamet and the next day to Tunis port.

We didn't experience any real problems on the way although situation is quite tense and unpredictable. There were still police station, some factories and shops burning on the way. We were driving only at daylight using many local roads in order to avoid city centers.

In my opinion the biggest treat comes from the gangs of kids equipped with sticks etc. which are more or less looking for "some action" since currently there is no real control ...
