Tunisia/Algeria guide rules
 

I am driving to Timbuktu in Dec (still looking for a driver to pay one vehicle's fuel and ferry costs). I am planning to go to Tozeur and then to the border with Algeria near Nefta. Will I need a guide for any of this Tunisian leg? As far as I can remember it is all pretty easy going this route.

I have an Algerian Tuareg guide lined up to meet me at the border but he is not from an agency. Will I need a letter of invitation? And if so who could I get this from if I am not planning to hire a vehicle or a guide from them?

And what about Algerian and Tunisian visas? Are these easy and hassle free to get on entry or is it best to get them beforehand?

you do no need a guide in Tunisia to drive to Tozeur and further to the border with Algeria.
As European citizen(?) you do not need a visa for Tunisia. If you have doubts check with the Tunisian representation in your country.

In Algeria you definitey need an accredited guide and an LOI to obtain the visa. Ask your guide to provide it. Algerian visa are hassle free if the required documents are provided and require a few days up to 2 weeks.
