Trip round Mediterranean Sea

Hi Everyone,

I am planning a trip from Bulgaria to Bulgaria round the Mediterranean Sea. Is that trip possible? Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, France, Italy, etc.

For which African countries would I need security escort? Any closed borders?

I did search but only found isolated issues for very specific regions.

Any info is welcome!

Regards,
ilian

PS: I promise to be back for the HU meeting on July 10 :)

All possible until you get to Algeria-Morocco border which is long tine closed. But you will have seen plenty by then so ferry back to Italy from Tunis.
Libya will probably require an escort.

Thank you, Chris!

What about ferries from Algeria to to Spain? Algeria to Morocco (by ferry)?
We want to make the trip as close to a "round the Mediterranean Sea" as possible...

And I know this is very individual but if you were to make the trip how much time would you give yourself?

Thanks!

There is no way to get from Algeria to Morocco unfortunately. You could perhaps take a ferry to Spain, then from Spain back to Morocco, but if you try to get there direct from Algeria they will take a very dim view, and most likely turn you back.

How about sailing to Morocco, riding clockwise round the med and finishing in Algeria?

Around Mediterranean Sea

Hei, due to the problem of Marocco - Algerian border I did this journey in 2007. Fantastic trip, and I would do it again. But a long way around the problem border.

In Egypt you will need a Carnet, wich is expensive!

priffe 8 Dec 2009 14:25

You can get as far west as Ghazaouet in Algeria, take the ferry to Almeria and from there to Melilla. That would make a near complete tour of the Med.

Dave it seems Algeria to Morocco is a no go. Didn't realize that. So if I go clockwise how do I get out of Morocco ? Is there a ferry to somewhere ?
I had planned to go anti clockwise not knowing of the border problem. Buggrr. I see "priffe" talks about ferries so is it poss to do the Morocco (Melilla) to Spain (Almeria) and the to Algeria (Ghazaouet) perhaps ?

Lotsa ferries Ferries - Book Cheap ferries to France, Ireland, Holland and other European ferry crossings
For some reason, Algerian ferries are more expensive.

The border is closed since 1994 (25 years) and since then Algeria is doing way better : less terrorists, less drugs, less Moroccan prostitutes.
I can understand your frustration as tourists but for us algerians, our safety is more important.

I'm planning this trip for later in the year, is the above a viable solution to the Alg / Moroc border problem ?

Has anybody done this route recently ?

Any pointers for advice would be very welcome, thanks .

Not sure about this ferry running post-Covid. I can enquire if you want ( I live in France and I know lots of Algerians here ).

Sadly many hurdles for you on the way :

Turkey to Syria to Jordan by road is unfeasible at the moment. Maybe ferry Turkey to Tripoli ( Lebanon ) then on to Syria and Jordan with an agency/escort ? You'd need to research that leg carefully and plan accordingly/financially.

The Sinai in Egypt is still probably off limits. Unless there is a ferry out of Aqaba skipping the peninsula.

And Lybia with a very thick bullet proof jacket :innocent:

Good luck !

I agree, Libya is not the place to go right now. Things are very unsettled there and your personal safety would be at great risk. There are armed conflicts taking place, and there are several different groups struggling for control of the country. They don't get along with each other, and they have control of different areas of the country.

That is a pity, because it is a nice country with very friendly and hospitable people. It will be quite a while, though - likely years - before it is prudent to travel in Libya.

Thanks for the advice, I'll probably go back to the drawing board then.
