Travel restrictions in Tunisia

Off to Tun again next month, heading down to Ksar Ghilane. Do the new travel restrictions, ie Guide, GPS, sat phone, apply to the piste to Ksar G from Douz or is it only for the region south of here?

Any up-to-date info most welcome.

Travel restrictions in Tunisia

Hi Dave,

Thanks for that.

Latest info I've got is that you need an official guide (100-200€ a day), an authorised permit for the route planned and registered GPS (declared at port of entry - always a ball-ache)

Having driven that piste several times, and considering that you can now get to K. Ghilane on tarmac, I'd be very surprised if you needed a guide or a permit in that area, it is driven by locals on a daily basis.

The military zone, the area that always in recent years required a permit, is below K. Ghilane.

Anyone got any confirmed info on where the restrictions apply and what the requirements are?
never had any problems registering GPS's at La Goulette - guess I must have been lucky!

Travel restrictions in Tunisia

See the attached map. There are two resticted zones - Northern & Southern. For both zones you need GPS, satphone, approved itinerary and authorised guide. The only difference between the two zones is 2 vehicles minimum for Northern and 4 vehicles cminimum for Southern.

We're off there in a week. Will let you know how it pans out.

OK, thanks for the info - who approves the itinerary and where? I'm aware of the contact details for Ali Bechir but so far he's been a bit elusive.... The police post at Ksar Ghilane has issued 'permits' in the past costing nothing but an hours time and a few cans of coke from the cafe at the oasis

Official permits, were in the past, available from the authorities in Tataouine, in person on the same day - not sure if that has changed now though.

Tunisia permits

At present, travel permits still through the governor's office in Tatouine.

Yeah, I guess in the restricted areas as on the map mentioned earlier.
The "normal" accessible by road areas are not a problem, just what some call "the far south".
