Transporting road bike from Djanet to Tam?

Partly following on from davor's recent thread -

Any ideas on how easy/costly it would be to fly a road bike from Djanet to Tam?

After riding Tunis-Djanet I'm wondering whether returning north on a different route might be a nice idea, or will the Tam-Ghardaia road be an anticlimax after Tunisia to Djanet? And I assume I could even make a detour via Reggane and Timimoun if the mood took me?

It's only a thought - I sometimes think going back the same way _is almost_ a different route. You see things completely differently, although obviously you're still hitting the same towns/villages.

would that be to air-freight your pan-handle? ;-) 250kg = £50 or something silly. might as well take a " declaration of dangerous goods" with you. not sure they'll want to take your battery and very sure you won't find a replacement in Tamanrasset.

Omar - the head of flights in Djanet - is a top chap with limited resources so you'd probably need to find a way to crate it yourself. everyone in Djanet is ace so you'll get help with crating.

are you aware there is a 20km(?) break in the road between Tamanrasset and In Salah? I haven't been that way so I don't know how bad it is, but I heard it got washed out in the October rains and doubt its been fixed yet.

Having watched our XRLs get shoved in a 737s porthole sideways at Tam I'm not sure a Pan will fit or be worth the hassle of dumping your battery, oil, air in tyres and fuel. Like you say, the same ride back is another trip and fun to redo.
fyi Arak washed-out section is OK for any vehicle and In Salah to Reggane is sealed (despite new 741 map).

Thanks for all the info - maybe not such a bright idea!

I haven't put a bike on any other than ferries before, and hadn't really considered the hassle factor of air, even with an XRL. Although if I'd strained my memory a little more, I would have recalled reading about such things in AMH.

That road'll have to wait....
