trans-africa dec2001...route?

hiya all,,
we intend travelling UK to Cape Town in Dec2001 departing from UK.
We still have doubts over a firm route.
We would like to avoid Egypt and Sudan if
possible but still keep to the east african side....Ferry fron Suez to Djibouti??
Will be in L/R 90 Defender Tdi...
We have experience in Southern Africa but this will be the first travel north of the equator..
Any comments welcome..

Hi,

I was waiting to see if somone who knows more about this than me would respond!

At the moment it seems that Egypt to Sudan via the Haifa (spelling?) ferry is OK. Port Sudan is evidently also OK to use.

I have not heard of a car ferry to Djibouti - only of vehicles being shipped in containers. The Djibouti - Ethiopia road is currently not recommended for private vehicles due to poor security.

You could try shipping to Berbera in Somaliland (not to be confused with Somalia!), although I have not heard anyone game to do it, apart from locals. Then the next alternative is Mombasa.....

Cheers,

Andy

Hi Mr Schoeneberg,
here is a link of somebody who did it from Aachen in Germany.

May that you find some helpful hints.
Best regards Rainer
