trans africa

We are planning to an overland flying from the US to London, and then driving from London to SA. We hope to hit the west and then cross to the east. Is this possible and what route? We are planning on arriving in London on July 1st and after purchasing and outfitting a truck, will leave for the trip which will last aobout 13 months. Any advice, tips, suggestion, warnings, etc. would be fantastic to receive. Cheers
