Tombouctou sign in Zagora is gone?
I was in Zagora recently and I could not find the Tombouctou sign anywhere. I was using the Lonely Planet Morocco map to find it. At the circle near the turn off for Foum Zguid - searched everywhere and no sign. Has it been taken down, and if not, where exactly should I be looking for it?

It was there last year when I was there in July.

If you are talking about the bigger stone one............
Drive through Zagora until you see a large Gov building in front on you, where the road bends left. On your right is a smaller road and it is a few yards up there on the right. Sorry was not that important so no grid no's....... |
I saw it in october, it has been moved, now it's close to an hotel, don't remember the name

Zagora sign
Hi Monkii
I was in Zagora a couple of months ago. Drive down the main street and turn right at the junction at the end. the sign is 50 m on your right. Unfortunately it's not the original sign ( I believe this is now in a museum in Rabat). It's a fairly crude replica without the signs of ageing of the old one. Happy trails Jojo |
We were in Zagora a few months ago and my wife was keen to see the sign. We could only find the one near the hotel, which looked a bit "fresh" to be real, and I'm sure the arrow was pointing towards Marrakesh !

The signs changes a lot. I remember the first time I saw it it was in the middle of nowhere while in 1998 there was a hotel behind it and it looked like this:
timbouctou sign 1 In 2003 it looked like this: timbouctou sign 2 And I see that that a few months ago Timbouctou is now in the other direction and there is one camel less than before :-) I was in Zagora last year and I think I remember they moved the sign to a another street close by the old sign. |
