Chad - Ennedi & Tibesti travel

Hi,
I am looking to travel to the Ennedi and Tibetsi on a large anti clockwise loop from N'Djamena. I know guides are needed for most of these areas, but can anyone recommend how to go about arranging the logistics for this, and moreover, what the likely costs for this are to be.

In addition, any idea on the best maps for these areas and where to get them from?

Maps

I am hoping to travel that way this November-Jan. (assuming I can get a visa -see my other post) I have bought 4 of the topographic maps over the web, directly from the IGN in Paris (Institut Geographique National) To cover the Tibesti and Ennedi regions I bought the maps LARGEAU, BILMA, TIBESTI EST and DJADO.

Thanks for that, I have found them on the IGN website, I presume you refer to the 1:1 000 000 series? Also, were they quick to dispatch the maps etc...

What route are you looking to take in Chad and how are you travelling?

1000000 series

Yes - they are the 1: 1,000,000 series. IGN sent me the maps to me in Australia promptly.

I hope to travel by any form of transport I can find to get to Fada, and organise a camel circuit in the Ennedi region, and go the same in Tibesti starting in Faya Largeau and or Zouar. If I could achieve some or any of this, then that would be great. I try not to have my expectations too high -because you can become disappointed.

Mind you -it all hangs on getting a visa..............

You should contact agency Spazi d'Aventurra. Or Tchad Evasion. They are the specialists on Chad. But it will not be cheap, even if you go there on your own.

By the way: on the LP Thorn Tree forum I read a story on travelling by public transport to Fada not that long ago.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
