tamanghasset-in guezzam-arlit - condition of road

is that road passable by VW Caravelle - typical microbus?
how do you think?

ferdi 9 Sep 2006 07:23

No problem for a 2WD, the part "Dunes de Laouni" is now piste (or paved?) and you can look relaxed at the "old caravelles" laying in the sand by passing by fast.

gvdaa 9 Sep 2006 08:24

After In Guezzam you might encounter some problems because of soft sand. So deflate your tyres and take sandplates. If it's your first time driving in the sand you will surely get severely stuck a couple of times.

thank's gvdaa & ferdi for your info's;
that's not my first time sand-driving - i've been drivin' in Mauritania, Mali and Burkina Faso before - also by 2wd;
how long is that part of the road which is called "Dunes de Laouni"? where's that exactly? is that in Niger?

ferdi 9 Sep 2006 09:54

Hi hajle,

in the middle of nowhere between Tamanrasset and InGuezzam - maybe 500 meters long. You will see it if you see the dozens of broke down cars (only the chassis left), "Dunes" you will not see. But there is an nice alternative route called "Piste of Stonemens" west of the highway. It's a bit more sandy but not so much traffic there. And if you follow the stonemens an than straight south, you can avoid the highway for a big part to InGuezzam. Or take the eastern piste by passing the Military Checkpoint an follow the valley to In Guezzam.

When will you pass there? Maybe we will meet us in the middle of nowhere.

i'll try to get there in February; maybe we'll meet somewhere there;
i know right now what "Dunes de Laouni" really is - Michael Palin has treated about that;
greetings

Who is Michael Palin?

Chris Scott 9 Sep 2006 10:36

Bounty offered (plain or milk chocolate)

If anyone on the piste/road between Tam and IGZ ever spots the shell of a green with yellow BMW 2002 (late 1970s car) about 150km south of Tam it would be great to get a waypoint.

Hi Chris,

after a few sandstorms an the sunlight the whole year the colour is normally away, so better discribe the place where the rest of the BMW rests, and how long.

I will look for it, when i pass there.

Mines infos

Hi all,
Some people told me that driving off the piste from In-Guezzam to Arlit is dangerous because some land mines are just feew meters from it...
I've never ear before (?)

Any news?
Thanks!
Ag

Hmm, I rode off the piste from In-Guezzam to Arlit because the piste was corrugated and it goes in a slight bend. I didn't see any mines...
