Tam Agadez

Hi everyone,
The project of driving through the sahara with my 2CV and then to Middle East & Central ASia is doing pretty well. Start is scheduled for mid-february. Reading you posts here suggest that most people don't actually cross the sahara to niger from Algeria, but do tour Alg & drive back to Europe.

I read the story of these to belgian guys currently driving this route & I feel they were really lucky to get military escort to the alg border from Tam (by chance?). I don't think I want to try this in only one car, esp a 2WD, so what are my chances to meet someone along the alg route who is wanting to head further south to Niger?

By the way, travellers intending to do the same trip at the same time, feel free to contact me!

cheers!
Séb

You don't need a military escort from Tam to Agadez, particularly not in a 2CV.

Er, that's it. Anybody out there disagree?

Sam.

hi sebch
we came from ghana a month ago....arlit-tam.no need for an escort...feel safe. during the day you won't find too much locals driving down but ask around and you'll certainly find somebody. if you feel a bit more adventurous....no problem during the night...lots of traffic!! avoiding the heat or the army??
have fun

Hi folks!
I didn't mean that a military escort was mandatory. What happened to these two Belgians is taht apparently by chance the army had to convoy a few TLC's to the border at the time they were in Tam. The boss of the army in Tam insisted that they joined the convoy for safety reasons: "your car is never gonna make it" (read their account: http://www.brussels-capetown.com/eng/journal_5.htm). That way, they didn't have to travel alone with no back up in case of major break down... which I would personnaly appreciate.

What do you think, you 4x4ers? My 2CV will make the crossing a thousand times if requested to ;-) Ok maybe not, but will handle it for sure!!
Thanks for your supportive info & contact proposals. I'll answer these shortly!

You can do Tam-Arlit with a two wheel drive without great difficulty - there is not too much soft sand - with clever/careful route finding there can be almost none.

Once in Tamanrasset, check out the 4wd camp places - almost all along the same road, to the east of town, and you have a good chance of meeting others about to do the same route.

I have done it twice, but both times with a 4wd - you will know your limits better than me, but my advice is prepare well and go for it!

Sam.
