Sudan in July and August?
 

Is it worth considering travelling in Sudan at this time of year? Is it too hot for travel? Unfortunately it is the only time I can go. Any responses will be appreciated.

that's rather a wide open question for a big country with very varied climate and lots of places you can't go, even assuming you can get a visa.
the desert (my favourite part) and Khartoum (my second favourite part) will be fiercely hot and I wouldn't go earlier than November, but, then, I don't like it over 40 degree C.

since the helicopter crash of Sudans president a couple of days ago, Sudan has become quite an unsafe place. The military has set curfew hours as of 24:00. Officials do not suggest to travel to Sudan until the situation is back to normal.

I had travel in Sudan in 2002 in february- march and from Karthoum to Waddi Halfa, it was already quit warm. so, i presume july and august must be very very hot!!!!!!!
Except hot and security, Sudan was my favorit african contry on our 18 month's African trip. All the way from Karthoum to Waddi Halfa is great.At this time, it was safe there.

After the violence beginning of August, the situation is calming down in Sudan. But according to officials, the areas outside of Khartums should be avoided as well as the northern part of Sudan.

I crossed Sudan from Ethiopia via Khartoum to Wadi halfa in August 2004 .It was really hot, but considering it is the Sahara its ok. Be aware of the fact that you can easily drink 5l of water a day and still be thirsty. All along the road are ceramic pots filled with water for travellers, this looks filthy, but i drank it every day without purifying and never got sick. I took some foolish chances crossing desert without mapping GPS, I dont advise this. One crossing from Dongola (I think) heading North off the road has markers which are easy to follow. Well worth the effort, on Mich Map its the thin black line joining a loop in the Nile. Roads are fun, but terrrrrrrible Corrrrrrugations will drive you made and break things you never thought would break.

As for security: Americans are unwelcome, no surprises there! I travelled without any hassles from police or soldiers and people were super friendly. Of course Darfur is to be avoided. US websites warn against travelling there, but they tend to be over cautious about countries they've recently bombed without good reasons.

Blue nile Sail Club in Khartoum is nice and a good place to meet others. If you run into a local tour guide/cyclist (youll know who i mean if you meet, he is there a lot) he is a fountain of knowledge and a really good guy. Wish i could remember his name.
