South of the Hoggar
 

I hope to cross from Djanet to Tam, passing to the south of the Hoggar etc. Has anyone reading this done the southern route on two wheels? What is the terrain like? Thanks.

Hello Richard - I know it only by camel or 4x4...It depends how far south you travel. It is mainly sand with isolated rocks. There is also an Erg (Kilian) near the border.

We did it with 4 bikes in 89 (with LR support) - and it was fine.and fun - (3 made it to Tam) The terrain is interesting and easy - bit more int. than regular Djan Tam (A2 - updated).

freeeoww, Sula! those links are just awesome. some of the french was a little tough to follow, but the pictures speak for themselves. the route to the north of the Hoggar was good this year, but the southern cross just looks better and better. thanks!

did you go to Assekrem on your honeymoon last summer? I had a nose through the guest book there and think I saw your name/email.
despite the limitations on range, creature comforts etc, I prefer two wheels. I took the easy option and went with Chris's gang last year, but plan to go unsupported this year so I might need to take you up on a fuel/water dump. when are you going? maybe I could give a guide a lift back if you leave him with the fuel? ;-)

Going to be in that area around 7 Nov. Can easily do a fuel drop wherever - interesting idea on picking up a guide!

If the dates don't fit exactly, still not a problem to set up a hide for you to find later.

Hello !
Did this trip in Dec 01 on 4 wheels - we took the "standart" route from Djanet - Mt. Tiska - Erg Admer - Afellahlah - H. Tiririne - Oued Honjad - Oued Takalous - Oued Tadant - Oued Tibeleghtaghine - TAM.
All together about 700 km , very easy terrain to drive for 4 as well as 2 wheel !
The part from GARA DEBANET to TAM ( 3 third )is NOT recommended in case of several long parts of unbelievable dusty ways through "powder flour" - very unpleasant in cars, so I think much more on 2 wheels !
If I would do this again , I would bend at GARA DEBANET to direction south to "H. In EBEGGUI" and than to north - disadvantage : 150km more!

Hi, Hannes. Yes, I'd be interested to see the route you followed so I can check I understand it properly. What were the highlights? From the maps that I have studied, I don't see much chance of finding drinkable water. Is this right? Thanks.

What map are you looking at Richard, an A-Z of Birmingham ;-))
There's water and possibly more at:
Afellahlah
Tiririne
Tarabine
and Tadant I'm sure - only a couple hundred kms apart.
You could do it in 3 days easy - may not even need water.

The track is on the way - as Chris says 3 days are enough .
Highlights :
Erg d´Admer crossing from Mt. Tiska in direction WEST .
Wells ( 4 ) at Afellahlah and very nice and helpfully military guys.
H.Tiririne (NO drinking water )but enough for showers.
A narrow gorge ( smugglers ??? ) in the middle of the way - if alone , a good place for overnight( N23°4.408 E7°42.073 )
