Should I bring printouts from the Maroc Topo (olaf) maps?

I notice these GPS maps have a lot more tracks on than the Michelin map. Since I would like to travel a lot off road would it be a good idea to print off the mapsource view of the map onto A4 or A5 laminate to bring so I can look for off road tracks when travelling around?

Anyone else done this - I guess I could mark them on the Michelin map but would take many hours and probably not that accurate.

Hi
I went in Morocco one year ago ( and 8 years before ) I used a gps map, not this one but an other more or less the same.
But I had also maps on real paper, gps is not unbreakable, if your gps become out of order what do you do ??.
Having a real map and also a compas is a minimum, even if you have a gps.
100 km before Zagora we met 4 italians lost without gps, map, compas and also water !!!! :helpsmilie:in fact they was 8 bikes with a 4x4 but during a sand storm the group has been split in two and 4 of them was totaly lost, we guide them until Zagora, we negociate a beer before and they never pay it:thumbup1:

Madmappers have copies of teh old russian maps for free down load .. that would give you two different maps .. the one on the GPS and the paper one

MELTEMI - Map sets navigator

They are in ecw format .. infa view with a pligin will view them and print them ..

I normally take A4 blow-up photocopies of the Michelin Morocco map as it's easier to refer to a single sheet of paper than try to fold maps. Also I can have it at a higher resolution. I also take the map, but remove the thicker cover.

Doing the same with the Maroc Topo is a really sensible idea.

The problem with maps is that the rate of road building in Morocco means they are quickly out of date. The Russian ones are nearly 20 years old, and whilst interesting, not much use for planning.

The Maroc Topo maps are designed for use on the GPS, not as a paper map.. no grid lines, no 'collar' with markings, no scale, no distances between places .. and to see the detail you have to zoom in .. and sometimes a lable will overlay another lable if you try to print it on a smaller bit of paper..

I'd tend to go with a map designed for use as a paper map .. it will be a lot easier to use (if you real have to use it).

Hi

you can find on internet ( bringing by a donkey) old map done when french colonist was in Morocco around 1950 I think. Those maps are calibrated for OZI or TTQV, the scale is 1/200000, concerning the tracks if I insert my GPS tracks saved I was impressed by the fact that the tracks drawn on the map are right regarding the track recorded by the GPS.
I printed those maps on A3 pages.

I have no idea what the donkey referance is- some way to look for these maps on the internet?

I also don't know what OZI or TTQV are - grid systems?

Donkey, this is emule, a peer to peer internet application

OZI and TTQV are software dedicated for maps management, they allow more or less the same functionalities than mapsource but more open.
