Ship wreck grave yard Mauritania?????
Is this place tru or is it something I lust have dreamt one night, has anybody seen it or been there or even better if it is true and does excist where is it and do you have the GPS co ordinates of it??? and is it worth a look....am I even fishing in the right country. Was something I read about long ago and will be in Mauritania in a few days.

there are some beached ships (fishingboot sice) on the beach between naoudibou and naouchot, if i remember correctly. doe you mean those?

yeah I imagine there are a few but I think I read about a particular spot where there are loads of bigger ones......thanks for the reply though, maybe I did dream about it one night!!!!

Yup its there alright, or at least it was in Dec 2004.
Just south of Nouadibou near the train station if i remember correctly (if you can call it that). And it is fairly wierd. There was around 15 abandoned, rusting wrecks dotted around the bay. I was told they leave them there to avoid high decommissioning costs. |

Well , there's nothing magic , or exiting about this ship graveyard. For years , Mauritanian harbour offiecers were so corrupt , that they let discard ships in the harbour in exchange of some cash (directly to the officer's pockets ) . Discarding a ship is horrilbly expensives, so during decades ,lots of unwanted ships ended up in the Harbour of Port-Ettiene (nowdays Nouadibou ) . 2 years ago the thing was so out of control , that even Mauritanians started to worry . As far as I know ,they give the contract to a Spanish ship company to either refloat all these junk and take it away , or destroy in situ (with explosions ) the remaining wrecks but Its nothign beautifull . Its a smelly , stinky , rusty collection of dodgy , small fishing boats. If someone is in these kind of things .. there are much more interesting wrecks , beetween Boujour and Dakcla (essencially the same , some people just crash the boat in the shore and run avay to avoid paying charges for that ,as It was no-man's-land during the Western Sahara war , etc.. These more interesting wrecks are in the beach , so they are ready for "inspection " . Be wary as a lot of people live inside , and -while generally willing to show the boat for you , they can be skecty sometimes- Be prepared to pay around 1 -2 Euros for a full tour inside the huge merchant boats. You can even buy from them some memorabilia (gauges , funny boat things , etc.. ) if you are lucky . Have a nice day |
Berny Sebe, the author of a bunch of books on the Sahara, did a trip down to Mauri to photograph the shipwrecks. I'm pretty sure its the same ones....
