Senegal-Morocco

Hey everyone!

I'm thinking of flying from Lisbon to Dakar and to go back on the atlantic route via Mauretania and Morocco in three and a half weeks in April.

Is it possible to travel alone? Do you have any information for me about traveling alone on this route? What are the problems I would have to face?

On the homepage of Sahara Overland this route is recommended for hitching/busing. So for which part of the route exist buses? I read in my lonely planet Morocco that there should be buses going from Dakhla in northern direction. What about the rest of the way? Are there enough other travelers on the way between the mauretanien border to Dhakla, so that I´m able to rely on that hitching works?

If you are using in April more or less the same way, please send me an email.

So if you can tell me anything about this route, let me know!

Thanks, Morten

There are no problems on the route, and it is easily managed by public transport. Going from Nouakchott north there are loads of bush taxis, usually Merc 190s with 7(!)people inside. You can either get off at the crossroads and walk ther few km to the border and wait for a lift ther or go direct via Nouadhibou.

There are also Merc taxis on the Moroccan side going to Dakhla. From here there are buses to Agadir and so on.

Try to get the Mauri visa before you leave but it is also easy to get it in Dakar. I dont know the current prices but a year or so ago it cost 40 euro for 5 days, extension no problem. I met people who got it in Rosso but I dont know if this was a "one off" or if it is standard policy.

Thank you Kevin!

What you wrote to me sounds good. I'm quite sure right now that I'm really going and a friend of mine is joining me. That should make it even easier.
