Selling Landcruiser in Gambia

Hi,

I believe Gambia is RHD; will it be possible to sell a 80 series Toyota Landcruiser there, and fly back without too much hassle?

Ghana is not the best place to sell a vehicle, the customs guys are pretty hot on people entering with and selling RHD vehicles - without a Carnet they can be reluctant to let you enter the country with a RHD - much better to take a LHD and you could sell it in Mauritania or Mali much easier.

My apologies, Gambia drives on the right, correct. A useful site for the future is:
www.brianlucas.ca/roadside/

We've sold a RHD 60series Cruiser in Mauritania before, a real adventure, and not for the faint-hearted.

Update:

Here's a message I got back from Paul who's based in Gambia:

"You could probably find a buyer for your Landcruiser in The Gambia however
the customs authorities have been severely restricting the import of RHD
vehicles into the country. For that reason and traditionally most of the
2nd hand vehicles coming into the country originate from Holland, Germany
and Belgium.

In addition to the actual import duties (allow 30 to 40% of the value of the
vehicle) importers of RHD vehicles must pay a refundable deposit to the
customs. This deposit is to ensure that within 3 months of importation the
vehicle is changed over from RHD to LHD. Provided the job is done your
deposit is refunded, if not you will lose your deposit and probably the
vehicle will be impounded as well! Not sure how much the deposit currently
is.

Rules and laws change daily in the Gambia and so my local operations guy is
currently checking the latest regulations. We will revert as soon as I have
an update.

Shipment to South Africa or the UK can also be arranged."

This pretty much sums it up.
Thanks Paul

Apologies, Gambia, not Ghana Ill get my eyes tested...
Yeah Gambia is a tough place to get to - you have to get through Senegal - no vehicles over 5 years old without a Carnet unless you pay for the douane/police to escort you through to the Gambian border - that was last year though so may have changed - maybe sell in Nouakchott and bush taxi it to Gambia if you want to go - but youll get a reduced rate for a RHD.
Cheers
