If you have to make this question ,.. then for you is no possible to make a profit by selling cars in Africa.

Years ago was possible and somehow profitable . Un?Fortunately , more and more people went into that fashion of buying bangers in Europe , and selling them in Mali,Mauri,Sene,Gambia , and this had 2 effects :

1 The excess in offers made african -prices for cars lower
2 they made the target-cars (Peugeot 504/505 , DB190 ) more expensives in Europe.

Also selling a car ( I mean selling , not discarding it for a few coins) is not to be taken lightly. a few scams exists , and in some countries selling imported cars is actually illegal .

Very few car dealers still stick to the business , and they veer to another kind of vehicles , another routes , and another selling countries , and they are not very keen on telling the details.

The market is gone for DBs , specially W123 and 190s .. People from Eastern europe *(Poland , Slovakia , Romania ) are flooding West Africa with the last remaining good examples of those .

Peugeots 505s are a rarity now in Europe , and they are actually more pricey in Eu than in Africa. They are seen as too old .
The next-gen Peugeots/Renaults (21s , 405's , BXs ,) if Diesel , could make a profit , but too small for the costs of driving to WA.

Any other exotic car (by exotic I mean ford , Opel , etc) is rarely gonna do any profit at all .

Most dealers now go to DaimlerBenz buses (207 ?) , and even those can't be sold for more than 3000Euros. It is actually un-profitable unless you ship your vehicle to Dakar .(google up "Socar" ) .

In a word . There is no room for more car-dealers. People now import cars via SOCAR , (you can tell 'cos African drivers keep the green Ferry Sticker on it with pride!) , which is more cost-effective than driving a car for 5000 kms .

Sorry about that

Buying in Africa

On the flip side, does anyone have experience buying a bikes/car in africa? For example buying in mauritania, selling in mali, or buying in Algeria, selling in mauri? Any advice is welcome, what types of cars are best. Where to sell? I have a basic knowledge of mechanics and can (sort of) speak some French.. I am fairly proficient in/on both bike and four wheeled vehicals. Done most of the atlantic route (hitching and bussing), and have traveled extensivly in the arab world, but I have never bought a car in africa before! Is this a dumb idea?

Chinese brand new cars then?

Hi,

I wonder if West Africans would like to pay some 20.000 USD for a brand new copy of LandCruiser 100? Or even cheaper 4WD makes of Chinese origin, all cheap and solid copies of Japanese 4WD.

From the other hand in Bamako I saw a huge number of dealers offering new, expensive 4WD cars: Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg etc. Are all these vehicles stolen in Europe then sold as bargain or still keep the (European) value? Is there market for cars more expensive then 3000 USD/EUR?

I bought new Chinese Isuzu TF 4WD copy and I would like to sell it within one-two years. Would it be the good idea to drive to Mali or Burkina? Is the price about 10.000 USD still available there for 2-3 years old 4WD, 5m long, solid, frame based, petrol fuel (Toyota 2RZ copy engine) vehicle?
