Schools in the Sahara

I'm just casting about for some info. Are there any government schools in the Sahara? What are they like? Do they attempt to reconcile cirriculum and a more pastoral lifestyle? Any info. or suggestions where I can find info. would be appreciated. Info. on the Sahel would also be great. As you can probably guess, I teach. Thanks.

The Sahara covers several different countries, each with their own political/social structures that are somewhat different.

I know of a volunteer organization that helps to fund schools for nomadic children in Niger.
Try http://www.turtlewill.org . In that country, nomads are poor and disenfranchised populations and the government does not go too far out of it's way to provide schooling unless someone else starts the process.

Thanks for the link. I know I've asked a very broad question, covering a huge region. I guess I'm still looking for my questions. I know, however, I'm interested in knowing more about how the gulf between the pastoralist and urbanist is dealt with in terms of access to education and what kinds of modifications, if any, are made to people still living in remote regions. Again, any info. or suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks Mike. I tried to send you a message at the address that you provided but I couldn't make it work so I hit the mail icon on your line on this board and sent it to you that way. I hope that you get it and I really appreciate any help you can offer.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
