Carnet requirement Morocco into Mauri? Current regulations?

I've come across more than one report suggesting that a carnet may be required to permit entry for vehicles over 5 yrs old. Can anyone confirm and/or shed some light on this please?

as far as I know it is not required. But just give me a couple of days I ant to cross the border to Nouadhibou in two days, at the moment I am in Laayoune. I let you know next week.

Hi, I called last friday the Mauritanian embassy in Brussels regarding a visa. They said that I would have to present a carnet to obtain such a visa if I planned on entering the country overland.

Thanks for the reply Patrick. As far as you know, does that include both 2 wheels and 4? Does that apply to ALL vehicles regardless of age?

again and again...

in short:
you do not need a carnet to enter mauritania.
(all kinds of vehicles, no matter which year of construction )

get your visa at rabat, morocco, nowbody will ask you to show carnet there.
at the border they do not care, wether you have one or not.



it´s only certain mauritanian embassies in europe who want to see the carnet,
belgium and switzerland for example.
if you apply in germany, it is printed at the visa- application that you need one,
but they issue the visa without carnet.

if more and more people show up at the border with carnet, i am afraid one day you really need one !!![

my last entry to mauritania has been 3 month before, but
i am in contact with mauritanian people working in tourist business.
also, friends of mine entered mauritania without carnet last week,


if you look at certain german sahara boards you will also find some postings from the last weeks, never ever problem without carnet.

i will go to mauritania next week, also without carnet.

in my opinion all this carnet story is only due to one posting in a french board a few month back. there somebody from a so called french- mauritanian alliance posted that you need a carnet f. cars older than 5 years, that they change the import rules and so on... that post has been crossposted in a lot of boards, and here we are now...
in fact there is a law in mauritania that you need carnet since 1999, but they never enforced it, they allways write the vehicle into your passport.

Thanks Todo. That's laid that one to bed! Planning a trip on a GS early in the New Year down to Senegal & Gambia. Just didn't want to find myself "stopped in my tracks" en route!

hi mystic,
are you aware that senegal in fact has this 5 years rule ?
actually it is meant to stop import of older cars but if you enter
senegal via rosso they want to see a carnet, even for a bike.
personally i only know two biker who could enter there
without a carnet since 2003.

to avoid problems you should enter senegal via diama,
there you can pay the senegalese customs to let you enter
without carnet, no reciept of course...

Yes, I'd already gathered that ..... Diama rather than Rosso! Advised by others on the UKGSer site who've been that way.

Hi Mystic,

I passed yesterday the boarder to Mauretania and as it was said before you do not need a carnet de passage. What you should bring is some photocopies of your passport, your card gris and patience. It took me yesterday more than four hours to pass. But they are anyway not interested in motorbikers.

Where I go next? It depends what the guys at the station tell me. If I can go by train to Chuim incl. motorbike I travel to Chuim, Atar, Chinguetti and then Noakchott. If this does not work I go directly to Nouakchott and down to St. Louis. After that the South banks of Senegal river. Then I have to go back via Dakar to Tanger/Moroc.

Thanks for your reply. Very useful. I assume that by "Card Gris" you are referring to Insurance cover documents?
I'm planning to set off around early mid February. From what you've said my planned route will be similar to yours. Would it be OK to get in touch after your return to check out a few things with you before I leave?

hi mike,

carte grise means the document of registration for your bike.

about senegalese customs:
as the cfa is fixed to the euro they don´t care to much,
they even accept strange money ...us-dollars.
