Routes from Morocco to Mauritania

We hope to cross into RIM in the next week or so - the maps show a route along the easten border north of the coastal road that allows acess to Chinguetti and the crater via a surfaced road that runs north to south on the RIM side. It's pretty much the only road that crosses the border that runs north-south between Western Sahara and RIM

Does anybody know if it's possible to cross the border by this route - excuse the vague directions as the maps are back at the campsite...

Thanks

Peter

Not possible w/o frinds in high places (as palin managed). The coast is the only way in (btw, its not a crater, tho it sure looks like one)

Hi Chris,

why it is impossible?

Tell me,is it possible to enter Algeria from Tunisia at El Qued, than go Hassi Messaoud, down do Djanet, than Tamanrasset,I-n-salah,Adrar,Abadla,Tindouf,and if not possible to go Maurtanie,go to Moroco instead, what are the road conditions, safety, etc(you say that everything south from Atlas mountains is relativly safe, right?)

cheers,

You can do the route you describe from west Algeria direct into north east Mauritania (Chegga) - but this is a radical route and rarely done. I think desertrunner mentioned it.

But from Tindouf I believe one cannot get into north Mori and certainly not in or out of Maroc, as a tourist.

Coming across the desert to Chegga is different than trying to leave a sensitive refugee town like Tindouf with Polisario 'no mans' lands' all around.

Once in Mori from Chegga, one could head for NDB and go up the coast into Maroc.

All in MHO, naturlich.

Hi

chris, what about leaving Tindouf to Farcia(w.Sahara)?

Is the border Maroc/Algeria closed all the way, south to north?

and, what do you mean by 'NOB' and 'MHO'???

Tindouf to Mauretanie via Bir Mohrein, and on to Choum,(the only route to Mauretanie,on most maps)is it possible, and how?

cheers,

jondoe

NDB = Nuadibou
MHO = my humble opinion (or his, anyway)

The only way into Mori from Maroc is down the coast.
No entry from Maroc to Alg for 10 years or more - or Alg into 'unoccupied' W. Sahara without Polisario back up.
