Rollcage

After seeing some pretty awful pictures of rolled LR Defenders, I'm wondering if a rollcage might be a good idea for general overlanding? Any opinions?

I would suggest however you figure out why they rolled.

Seems not necessary to me to try this, neither at home and sure not when travelling!

Good thing when you have a roll bar is that you can install a heavy-duty roofrack, in that case I would install it also but otherwise....

You could save weight (and space) by only installing the roll cage in the passenger area.

Best stay light on top and avoid the roll in the first place. The standard roof will take a reasonable roll if gentle and you're lucky. There is a dramatic picture of a Dicovery doing a big one on the inside back page of the Sept 2001 Land Rover World. It's steel body seemed to stand it well. Defenders ali body more vunerable though.

Hi all
having met a couple in Africa who had rolled their LR - the wife who was the passenger at the time lost a leg!!! - I would definately recommend it.

But most importantly of all make sure you and any other drivers are fully aware of the peculiarities of your vehicles handling and do NOT drive too quickly. for all the obvious reasons.
My vehicle did have a roll cage and out of choice and budget allowing - if you can't afford go without - I would have one fitted again.

Hi,

Overlanding is a matter of weighing up risks, will I take an entire gearbox in the back of the car etc etc.

I think that you would be VERY unlucky to roll your vehicle on an overland trip. There are heaps of things that are far more likely to bugger up your trip.

I reckon you should drive shorter, slower days and put the money towards that National Park that you would not have otherwise been able to afford.
