Robberies at Ceuta border

I have read a few articles about cars being broken into at Ceuta border.

I will be crossing into Morocco at Ceuta next week and would like to know if anyone has any tips about avoiding this.

How about leaving a rubber snake in the car? I know this can work as a deterent in Southern Africa, mabe it works in North Africa as well.
Failing that...try a real snake!

Ceuta is a safe place.

I cant really imagine that you will encounter any problems at all. I wouldnt worry.

I have used that border twice, once in a soft top Series LR, and never had a problem.

The Ceuta border is only a problem if you try camping there overnight - my advice is to cross well before dusk and then get to Tetuan or beyond before dark.

Otherwise there is a nice beach on the North side West of Ceuta town as you drive around in an anti-clockwise direction - it's well signosted

While crossing ignore the touts regardless of how official they make out they are - the real guys are pretty much all in uniform and for the most part keep to the offices.

As you cross into Morocco park to the right, lock the car, and take all your docs to the second set of windows on the left. There you will get you passport stamped with your entry number (check you have this)

Next go back (south) to the customs hut where they will need your entry number for the passport and a form that is easy to fill in yourself witht the vehicle details.

They keep one copy and you keep the other white one (I think) for surrender when you leave Morocco.

Now drive 30m or so to the insurance office on the left if you need to - otherwise you drive out with a check as you exit the area to make sure you have the white import form for the car.

As with any border area it's full of touts and the odd pick pocket; Be polite and respectful to the officials - I can't say enough good things about the Moroccan traffic police who treat tourists very well - I'm currently in Senegal where the police target foreign cars at every opportunity, and with all sorts of fake charges - it sucks.
