Riding from Egypt to Morocco?
 

Okay, so I know that as a U.S. passport holder I have to get a letter from a Libyan company. Will I be allowed to ride without a guide? Will I be allowed into Tunisia and from there into Algeria? What I am trying to do is see more country, more history, and taking a ferry from Egypt to Morocco is not getting much of that done. Note that we are going to be on a scooter and don't do off road. Tripoli would be good to see as well as some of the WWII sites and then the Roman ruins in Algeria.

For Libya I believe you need a VIP visa as an American - good luck...
Without a guide? I've lost track of the latest regs; probably not.

No probs with Americans in Tunisia or Alg, but anyone may have trouble getting into Alg from Tuni without meeting an escort.
Also, the NE of Alg where the Roman stuff is is the least safe region, but it's not like NWFP.
Plus of course Alg/Mk border is long time closed.

Thank you Chris. That is exactly the kind of info I needed. Guess we will just take a series of ferries to each country, load the scoot back up, go again, get off, see things get back on. When we get to Morocco we plan on riding up to Fez, then down to Casablanca, Merrakesh, Essaouiri then ???? somehow to Ghana

I would say bureaucratically Fez to Ghana will be the easiest bit.
People have brought it up here before but I don't believe ferry-hopping along the south Med coast from country to country is even possible. There is a coastal road after all.
For the reasons you mention this transit is culturally and historically very interesting and with a vehicle you will find Egypt, Tunisia and Morocco straightforward; Libya and Algeria much less so - or expensive.

Just so you know, but taking a series of ferries is going to get really complicated and expensive, really quickly!

Sorry to pour damp water, but I suggest you research your options thoroughly (with local operators) before going too firm on your plan.
