renting/buying car in chad

I will be traveling through the southern region of Chad in Jan-Feb. Does anyone know how easy is it to rent a 4X4 in Ndjamena and how much would it cost? alternatively how expensive is it to buy one there?
your help is greatly appreciated.
thank you.

Although I cannot answer about hiring/buying a 4WD in Chad, I am aware that the cost of renting an (old) 4WD in Mali -also a francophile country- is very expensive. I was there in late 2001. To hire a 4WD (including driver, -which was mandatory, and fuel) for 2 days was going to cost about $$US300. I declined and made other arrangements. I would be surprised if the costs were that much different in either Niger or Chad.

We looked at doing a tour in Chad with a
Guide. For the guide, a driver + vehicle, we were looking at about US$130 a day. Think cost to buy vehicle would be very prohibitive down there as very difficult to obtain vehicles. In addition, not the safest of places, even the French personnel stationed down there by the French govenment live quite closeted lives in their compounds, due to the security risks means trying to buy a vehicle might be a somewhat dodgy experiance. Would be better hiring (probably have to have a driver).
