Question about Mauritania

Hi, I've been lurking for a while but this is my first post here.

We're supposed to be three Land Rovers that were intending to visit Mauritania in December, planning on a circuit Nouadhibou, Atar, Chinguetti, El Beyyed, Atar and then heading for Tiouilit along some of the other pistes.

We've travelled together before and are reasonably capable desert drivers and campers but only in Morocco.

Are there any experts on Mauritania that could help in interpreting the current situation?

Is it definitely "forget about it for now" or is it still possible to think about travelling in reasonable security?

We shall, of course, be watching the situation but I would just like some feedback from people who know the country a bit.

Hope that it's not too big a question :cool4:

Best regards, Tony

I think the only 'reasonable' answer is 'watch this space'

As with all things African, things change in hours or even minutes ... I would still consider going back to Mauritania at the moment

You're not going till Christmas, the situation could get better or worse in the next few months!

I'm also heading into Mauri (solo on a bike) around Xmas and am watching the situation as well. At the moment I'm still going but as Kira said things can change rapidly. I'm prepping the bike etc as normal but I am aware that it could all change at the last minute.

I tend to agree with the comments above, wait and see what happens but have a plan B in case things get iffy. The news that incidents are spreading from the traditionally more lawless Eastern side to the West is slightly worrying due to its reasonable proximity to Atar ect but who can tell what’s going to happen in the coming months.

From what I can tell, the new government is equally disliked as the one that it removed a few months ago – just by different people. There could be a hundred and one different motivations for this attack from many different sides. Who did it and why will probably always be a mystery given all the political and economic sides to this coin.

Personally I’m watching with interest to see what develops but I would still consider (at the moment) Mauritania as a destination and still have trips planned.

Oops, was too quick! Thanks for your insight too!

To "backofbeyond" and "DWAIR",

Thanks, you pretty much sum up what I'm feeling. It's good to see that others are still preparing trips.

Fingers crossed for the situation getting better!

Thanks again,

Tony
