Overseas Insurance

Hello there,

Can anybody give me any help in where to get overseas insurance? My current insurance company won't cover me for more than 90 days and other companies I've contacted don't want to know, as I drive a Japanese import. There must be *someone* out there who can insure an import for more than 90 days abroad, isn't there?

Any help anyone can give will be much appreciated...

Thanks,

Paul

ps - Does anyone know if Overland Ltd (as advertised in the back of the Sahara Overland book) is still trading? I can't seem to find them anywhere...

Ah, the great "where do I get insurance from" question. I've been banging my head agaist the wall with this one for months and finally got a contact for a dutch insurance co. in Rotterdam. Their do comprehensive and 3rd party.

www.alessie.com

I asked for an estimate this morning so haven't heard but not expecting it too be cheap.

If you are looking for a "greeen card" 3rd party you can get on which covers Europe including Morrocco and Tunisia from either of the following.

Motor Insurers Bereau in the UK - 01908-830001

or Spain 1-446 03 00 which I think is a number in Madrid!

Please let me know if you pick up any other info.

Cheers

Mike

Hiya,

thanks for your help - the company I've had the most luck with so far, believe it or not, is the AA, although they won't overseas insure imports...or vans...in fact, just cars.

I have to say thanks to the chap I phoned a couple or three days back, though, as the advice he gave me was incredibly helpful.

Thanks again,

Paul

Hello there,

We have recently insured our vehicle in Kampala, Uganda for the remaining countries on the way down.

If you like to have more information about the company we used and the costs, give us an email and we will provide you with contact details and so.

However, three months of yellow card did cost us US$ 80 - 100 or so (but I believe mistake was made when calculating the price).

We also learned from an overlander truck driver that he insured his truck on the border between Tanzania/Kenia for US$ 250 per year!

Good luck. We simply left without and bought it finally in Uganda after trying in Ethiopia first.

I believeOoverland may not be trading any more if they dont answer the phone etc - they felt pretty marginal even when they put an ad in my book

I have used Alessie in the past, very good (although haven't had to claim which is always the real test!).
You can pick up some sort of insurance at a lot of border points - but this can be more hit and miss (a bit like the roads?!?).
Good luck (and drive carefully!).
