Overland travel in Egypt

I am planning to arrive via the ferry from Venice, in Alex late April, so am naturally keeping an eye on the situation in Egypt. Having driven north through Tunisia a couple of weeks ago with no problems at all, I am concerned, rather than worried, as I hope that by avoiding obvious hot spots, all should be okay. I am following Rory and Lucy Macdiarmid's progress in a rather tasty Sprinter 4x4 camper, who are there right now and sent the following email today (10/2/11)

Hi Toby,
Border with Libya more hassel than usual. Very obvious military presence. Good dozen Military road blocks to el alamein but every one quite cheerful despite tanks guns and fixed bayonets. Rural banks still closed and not found a working cash machine yet.....Driving round Cairo today so will let you know how it is.

Greetings from Hurghada, on the Red Sea coast of the mainland. Over the past two days I traveled here on my motorcycle, following the coast road from Dahab, passing through Suez along the way.

There were many army checkpoints, some just waved me through, but at a few they studied my passport details. At the checkpoint before the tunnel that goes under the Suez Canal, there was a very thorough search of my luggage, including looking though my computer and camera. (They got lost looking through my computer and finally just asked if I had any photos from Tahrir Square, or any information regarding military installations around Egypt. When I said "No" they thanked me and sent me on my way!)

In Suez (Thursday 10 Feb) I saw a group of protesters, about two dozen strong, and lots of military presence. There were long lines at ATM machines. But at petrol stations and cafes, the Egyptian people remain polite and friendly, as ever. No appearance of petrol rationing or other shortages along my route.

The road from Quseir on the Red Sea coast to Qift is currently closed to private vehicles. Learned this when I tried to use it to get to Luxor. The army said to go to Safaga and go west from there.

Just an FYI. Otherwise no problems on the road here (Luxor) from Hurghada.

Cheers
Sean
