Through the Sahara for the first time....

I am planning a trip through the Sahara for the first time, and I am in need of advice of what's necessary to bring along... I know there is probably plenty, but what would be the basics, and what's a good idea as extras so that there is still enough room for 2 people.... I will probably be driving a station wagon along the Atlantic Route to Senegal, or maybe a 4WD to Mali, not sure yet...
Any advice would be apreciated!!!

You may find Sahara Overland a useful book if your English is OK.

Thanks for the info on books!!!! I was thinking of buying the "Sahara Overland" already, I heard it's among the best on the subject, and since I will be driving a car the best of all excellent books adviced to me!!!

One more question... How much can I expect to be able to sell the car for (either a station wagon or 4WD pickup/landrover) if it's in moderately good condition?

Chris, isn't there a new edition in the pipeline? I'm holding out for that. I made that mistake with the Bradt book. One of the dangers with Africa (not exclusively) is that things can change so quickly some info is out of date the moment it's written; which is of course a brilliant excuse to head off to research the next edition
Happy trails

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive.
