no off-road in Libya?

i was alarmed in a previous topic that there are rumors of a proposed regulation/law in Libya that will prohibit any tourists from driving anywhere off-road. this would obviously change many of us Sahara overlanders' travel plans.

i have emailed with jamal at arkno tours and he said that this rumor is indeed legit but that the tourism agencies are fighting against any proposed regulation. does anyone have any more details on this situation? there is nothing noted on the official Libya govt website.

Hi Tom,

Hopefully I'll be entering Libya late September. I know that José Brito (see other posts) is entering in the next few days. When I hear from him, I'll let you know.

Not very comforting news indeed.

rgds,
Camiel

Hi -
Most of the agencies in Libya are refusing to follow these new restrictions, because they do not have enough cars, GOOD cars especially, to make tourists travel in their cars.
So once again: It is very important, with which agency you deal. If they tell you, its impossible to travel in your own car, just change the agency!
Fix every detail in a letter/mail before you leave and dont pay all in advance.

Happy travels
Ursula

Most of the agencies in Libya are refusing to follow .... do not have enough cars, GOOD cars ....

The last new laws, among others improvment already foreseen for a better tourism in Libya , give facilities to locals T.O. in buying brand new 4x4 (Toyotas)and others.

It is common opinion among local but also foreign that, like happened in the past for the guide's issue, slowly they will change mind.
