No easy way: via Chad, Sudan Wadi-Halfa might be leagal, but security advises for Chad might be disencouraging (Darfur Crisis). Border Chad-Sudan is said to be closed.

I need to get from Nouakchott in Mauritania to Egypt. It looks Mauritania to Mali to Niger is straightforward. Is this true. Also, should I consider going for Niger through Algeria to Libya and Egypt?

As I understand it, your only real legal option would be to go Mauritania - Mali - Niger - Algeria - Tunesia - Libya - Egypt. Because of the Darfur situation, crossing into Sudan would be difficult and going further south whilst still going east is not that safe (CAR / DRC / Southern Sudan all have their issues). The only other option would be to come out to Europe - eg Mauritania - Western Sahara - Morocco - Spain - France - Tunesia - Libya - Egypt.

Depends how risky you want to be, I guess there are lots of options if you want to bend the rules. Good luck.

I'm not interested in bending the rules at all. I'll bringing a small digital film crew with me so being inconspicuous will be impossible.

How is Algeria from Niger? I've heard mixed things. Some say it's really dangerous.

I'll be traveling on a US passport with a man with a Mauritanian passport.

What are the problems areas on the route from Mauritania > Mali > Niger > Algeria > Tunisia > Libya > Egypt?

And why would I need to include Tunisia? I'm interested in staying as far south as feasible.

No way through Algeria to Libya, only Libya-Algeria - that's why you have to go through Tunisia...

Chirfa->Djanet is open, but not recommanded (security). If you enter Assamaka/Ain Guezzam you will need a guide from Ain Guezzzam north, about 50@/day. If you don't arrange for on waiting for you, expect about 2-3 days to organize one.

Crossing Algeria/Tunisia border at Deb Deb / Fort Saint(Bordj el Khadra) is forbidden since more than 20 years .

I did Algeria to Niger in January. Guide not required from the border to Tamanrasset, but certainly helpful!

I believe the southernmost crossing from Algeria to Tunisia is Tozeur.
