Nema - Nara
 

Has anybody crossed the Mauritania border between Nema and Nara or Nema and Nampala ?

Are these open and can you buy a visa there and then for Mali ?

I did the Nema-Nara trip on a BMW F650 fully loaded in November 2000. Time: 2 days, difficult with heavy bike in deep sandy ruts, but doable. GPS not necessary. I bought the visa for Mali before leaving home in Canada. As far as I know, it is not possible to get Mali visa at border. So get it before leaving home, or in Nouakchott.

I decided to avoid the Nema - Nara crossing because of the rains (Aug 04) and took the tarmac road from Ayoun El Atrous to Nioro du Sahel and then the piste from there to Diema.

If you decide to head this way, the piste from Nioro to Diema is pretty waterlogged but can be done easily in a 4WD and you can go around the sides of the water in nearly every case.

Cant' help with the visa, I got mine in Nouakchott - easy, literally 10 minutes while I waited.
