NASA photos
 

Hi
I am looking to download the satelite photos of western Africa from the NASA website. I do not have broadband and can see that it would take about 6months to download on my dial up connection.

Has anyone already done this and would be willing to extend me a copy.

I want to drop it into TTQV 3 as I am planning on doing the Plymouth Dakar Challenge this year and the images would be helpful

I have'em all for north Africa. Will you be at the launch party tomorrow? I wount, but my team mate will and he could bring a DVD along, if you want. It's a few gigs for the Landsat 7 pics...

Landsat 4/5 is aprox 28.5m resolution and 50MB/pic ish, Landsat 7 is aprox 14m resolution and 150-250MB/pic

Thanks for reminding me of this NASA site. I still have the same problem though, what software package do I need to display or print the downloaded images?? The file extension is of a type unknown by my humble little PC.

The .tar format is a compressed file, just like .zip.
You need Winzip to uncompress the files

Lots of the satellite stuff is still optimised for UNIX systems (with the possible exception of MrSID, which I don't like anyway).

Chris, as you have a humble little PC, I’ll assume you are a Windows user. The .tar format files are not compressed as such, they simply contain a group of files (if I remember correctly TAR stands for Tape ARchive). Use WinZip or WinRAR to open them up. The images are in MrSID format (.sid) which you can view using some (free) LizardTech software.

You can download the MrSID Viewer (now called ExpressView Browser Plugin (MrSID)) which is an IE plug-in that enables you to view, zoom, etc. The program you want is called “exview_setup.exe”. Once you’ve run it, you then double click on a .sid file and IE will do its new funky stuff for you.

To change the format to, say a JPEG, you will need another piece of (free) LizardTech software called “mrsiddecode.exe”. This an MS-DOS programme, and running on one of these files you may think that your humble little PC has died. Do not worry, go down to the pub for a couple of hours and when you get back you will find that it now nearly 10% complete.

I found my main pc very slow when trying to handle a 128meg graphics file... think maybe its time for some more memory!

I tried to find "mrsiddecode.exe" from LizardTech but without success. Do you know where it could be downloaded ?
