Cool motorcycle rental in Tunis

I will be traveling to Tunisia in the spring of '12 for a visit with some family and do some exploring. I was wondering if anyone was aware of any rental agencies in Tunis where one could rent a motorcycle. Internet searching mostly turned up European based tour companies offering week+ long guided tours which would be cool but I have neither the time or money to do one of those. I'd like to find a place to rent a decent bike (preferably in the 250-850cc range) for 2 or 3 days. If anyone knows of a place I'd love to hear about it.
Thanks HUBBers.

Until 2010 anything larger than 50cc was impossible to register in Tunisia. In 2010 the limit went up to 125cc. If this did not change since then, you won't find a chance to rent what you want.

A few years ago I talked to a guy racing around Zarzis on a CBR600 and asked him about it since he was the first native on a bike I saw. He told me that it was not explicitly forbidden but the old regime did not allow it because of security reasons (quite like in Jordan). Registering a bike then depended only on the amount of money you would spend for bribes. The rider din't have the money, so he rode without registration.

One year in Douz I met a local guy on a bike. He bought it from a tourist that did not want to take his bike back home (for whatever reason). Instead of trying to register it in Tunisia he stuck with the french plates and had the advantage of being taken for a tourist at check points.

displacement isn't as important as availability. I'd be happier on a 50cc scooter than in a rental car. Just trying to get a feel for whats out there.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
