I crossed part way (for the rest my luggage was carried) with a 5 litre petrol can in each of my ortlieb throwover panniers. It made the contents of the panniers smell of petrol but apart from that didn't seem too much of a problem. Fuel is relatively heavy, so bear in mind the extra weight the fuel will place on your luggage and mounting straps. This time I have proper extra side tanks, made by Acerbis but I don't think they are available new anymore. What bike are you on?

Then you might get the Acerbis side tanks to fit. To get hold of some you might try asking at a KTM shop which deals in rallye bikes, for example www.ktm-sommer.de which if I remember rightly isn't too far from Belgium. For the TT600, Touratech used to make a 30 something litre tank for the TT600R Belgarda which might help if you can get hold of one. Also, I've heard of the BMW/Acerbis 45 litre tank fitting DR350s for the Paris-Dakar, so it might also fit your Dr650s. All expensive new, but you can always ask around (e.g. contact Belgarda) for secondhand rally equipment. Which route are you going?

Why don't you ask your Lieveke to follow you and to take your gasoline in her Toyota?
