Morocco: Tata to Assa off road via Merkala?

Hi all,

Does anyone know wheter it is possible to use the off road tracks in the Algerian border region South of Morocco? My Michelin map says many of these are forbidden, probably because they cross the Algerian border which is still closed.
There is a main road from Tata to Assa which we would like to avoid (Is this tarmac?). If possible we would like to ride from Tata to the tower of Merkala and then to Assa, south of that main route.

Any advice/experiences anyone?

Cheers

Demito
