Morocco-Mauritania, but not by Atlantic

Anybody have info on crossing from Western Sahara to Mauritania by anywhere other than the 'Atlantic Route'.

I suspect not, but always optimistic!

Sam.

hi

it's not the first time that this question is raised.

There are a few buglers/contraband pistes but with mines all around...

I would like not to do the atlantic route but I don't like the ideia of off roading side by side with mines....

if any body know a “safe” one let e know because I'm going to Mauritania in august

I think MAroc to Mori is tricky because of the long Moroccan berm (see Sahara access routes Map on my website) that divides the ocean side (Maroc) from the inland (Polisario/Saharawi) part of Western Sahara.
So I would try from Tindouf in Alg, get in with the Polisario who roam 'inland' W Sahara (Tefriti, etc) and from there its only a small step into Bir Mog (or some place to the east - Ain? - whose name escapes me).
its not maroc of course but there you go. - it was the old inland colonial route to Mori.
You have to hope that the Moris will let you in having got that far, but of course anything can happen/go wrong...

I did the route in 1993 and 1995, neither is to be recommended because of the security situation. Both times we did the route with locals, on the second occassion I was left alone when they blasted off after seeing other 4X4´s in the distance, they were worried that they were Moroccan customs, they picked me up later that night. There are a lot of mines and if I remember correctly a support truck for the Paris-Dakar drove over a mine at asupervised crossing in 2001 or 2002. There is a map giving an idea of the crossings on www.un.org/Depts/Cartographic/map/dpko/minurso.pdf Im passing Smara in late September to see if there is any "official" way of crossing.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
