Morocco Easter 2008
 

Looking to go out to Morocco Easter next year 2008 for first time, have been to Tunisia 2006 Libya 2007, so into Sahara Travel :cool4:

5 or 6 vehicles all land rovers going was just looking for any tips on where to stay clear of when over there and any info on customs getting in to Morocco would make it easy for us, the more we know now the less confused, :confused1: will be when we get there so any advice most welcome!

The route thinking of taking is this what do you think

1 Cross boarder drive on tarmac to Fez / Meknes - Campsite
2 Drive to wards Taza, Turn South at Sidi-Abdallah into Jebel Tazzeka. follow small roads and Pistes south through the middle Atlas to Outat-Oulad-El-Haj – Rough Camp
3 Cross the Rekkam Plateau on Pistes going South toward Boudnib (Head for El-Gorane) – Rough Camp
4 East to Errachidia head south to the Eastern side of Erg Chebbi camp in dunes
5 Follow Pistes West to Agoult – rough camp
6 Follow Pistes West to Tagounite, Tarmac N. to Zagora Camp Zagora
7 day off - in Zagora or do drive up to the Dades or Todra gorges and back via pistes through the Jebel Sarhro

8 South to Mhamid on Tarmac then West to Lac Iriki – Rough Camp nr Foum-Zguid
9 Foum-Zguid – west then South West to Tata and on to Assa – Rough camp Before Assa
10 Assa Piste to Samara – Rough camp before Samara,
11 Samara (fule- supplies) Piste to Laayoune –

12 North on Coast road to Tiznit – campsite in town
13 North to Essaouira – campsite in town
14 North to Cassa then Motorway more or less up to Ceuta – camp before Ceuta
15 Ceuta and back to Spain

Some suggestions

1: I have no personal experience, but there's a campsite in Fes called Diamond Vert at N33 59.126 W5 01.048.

2: Lovely route, I think it's all tarmac now. You might want to visit the Goufre Friouato at N34 06.102 W4 04.252 -- massive cave system and costs ~200dh to hire a guide.

3: I came across a feldspar mine at N32 39.640 W4 10.896. You'll cross several Dakar rally pistes, one of them rejoined roads just to the east of Talsinnt. Atchana French Foreign Legion fort is at N32 13.200 W3 49.200

7: The piste from Nekob to either Boumalne or Tinerhir takes several hours on a bike, longer with 4x4. You'll be hard pressed to do the piste, visit the gorges, plus return in one day.

8: The track through Lak Iriki has been recommended to me as a good alternative to the rocky piste further north.

9: If it's hot weather, stop for a swim at the Tissint cascades at N29 54.338 W7 18.924.

10: The Aouinet Asguer rock paintings are at N27 51.110 W10 39.440. Photo 16 on this link: Reisebericht Marokko 2005

11: Tbeila Rock is south west of Smara at N26 42.600 W11 59.800. Alternative campsite of Le Roi Bédouin is at N27 39.033 W13 04.750. Calcified waterfall on the way at N27 27.700 W13 03.100.

12: Gouffre d'Akhfenir is on your way at N28 06.420 W12 02.280, photo 9 on the above link. Suggest Legzira beach campsite just north of Sidi Ifni at N29 26.750 W10 07.008. Brilliant location, photos 2 and 3 on the above link.

Great to see that you DID receive my email with details of a 2 week tour of Morocco – I’m glad it has been of some use to you!

There are still (up until last spring anyway) a few pistes through Jebel Tazzeka although the rate at which the tarmac is increasing is quite impressive – a bit of exploring and map work is all that is necessary to find where the remaining pistes connect.

I did mention in the original route description that day 7 going up from Zagora over Jebel Sarhro to the Gorges would be a long one if you do it – Tim’s right, its about 3 to 4 hours by bike and can be a bit longer in a car.

Yes Hugh got your mail thanks just trying to get as mush info as can on routes and the like before we sit down with map and pen them in on it, then to change them when we get there, like you do on these trips ! we should be 6 Landys on the trip all fully gear up for overland

Been trying to fine gps map that will work with memory map but not found any thing as yet as Fugawi is all out of stock on line, all the sites have found that sell it are but, that fugawi :confused1: me loads I am better with paper ones have got the michelin 742 map just come today
