The correspondent of the ANI Dakhlet in Nouadhibou, a man was killed and four others wounded Monday by an exploding anti-tank mine in the buffer zone Ghandahar on the border between Morocco and Mauritania.

The explosion occurred a passing car type "Mercedes 190" with five passengers on board in the border area between-two countries.
The wounded were evacuated to the Hospital of Nouadhibou where the driver Didi Ould Aimar has succumbed to his injuries.

According to military sources, this area is known to be riddled with land mines of all kinds. What the past has been the cause of such explosions in passing cars who leave often frequented the roads to avoid the checkpoints.

Hmm. When I went through the WS/Mali border in 2008 there was a team of four Gibraltar-registered mine clearance 4WDs heading south.

The last reported mine incident was Feb 2007 when a French guy decided to follow the old 'Spanish tarmac' halfway through. I think I've seen that bit of tarmac leading off to the east and it looked very appealing.

So what with mines, terrorists, kidnapping, executions and pepper spray discussions, Western Sahara, Mauri, Mali, Niger, Timbouctou etc look decidedly 'interesting' for 2010.

Membership - help keep us going!

Horizons Unlimited is not a big multi-national company, just two people who love motorcycle travel and have grown what started as a hobby in 1997 into a full time job (usually 8-10 hours per day and 7 days a week) and a labour of love. To keep it going and a roof over our heads, we run events all over the world with the help of volunteers; we sell inspirational and informative DVDs; we have a few selected advertisers; and we make a small amount from memberships.

You don't have to be a Member to come to an HU meeting, access the website, or ask questions on the HUBB. What you get for your membership contribution is our sincere gratitude, good karma and knowing that you're helping to keep the motorcycle travel dream alive. Contributing Members and Gold Members do get additional features on the HUBB. Here's a list of all the Member benefits on the HUBB.
