Mauritania visa in Morocco - advice on border/safety?

Hi, we're currently in Marrakech and are planning to head to the Mauri border in around 2 weeks time. We're thinking of getting our visa at the border to save going back to Rabat (note we know someone who recently tried to get a visa in Casalanca, can no longer get it there, it is definitely in Rabat).

Does anyone have recent advice on getting a visa at the border, costs, and what the safety situation is like? The Australian Embassy has increased it's warning level but we would like to know how real the concern is!

Cheers, Xander and Mrs X

Sorry guys but bump.

Xander- I have no sufficiently up to date information- all I can offer is this-

1- Transit visas have been available at the border but do get 'stopped' for a variety of reasons- it is a risk you take to be turned around if they refuse and it is a long way to Rabat back is that happens-

2- to be sure of entry, I would suggest you stop in Rabat and get them there. It's on the way!
If you arrive at opening time you should be able to get it back the next day- Be aware of Fridays as they are only open until 11am due to Prayers- then are closed until Monday- so time it to arrive in Rabat on Monday,Tuesday, Wednesday for best chance of next day.

The Malian Embassy is only about 100 meters away from there as well.

Make sure you have local currency ( was about 350 Dirhams) and 2 passport photos each

Hi Thanks for the reply,
Since the bump, we have gotten confirmation that they are currently (14 sept 09) not issuing visas at the border. So it is back up to Rabat for us.
Cheers

Awiting Visa at Mauritanian embassy right now

Hi

If you have looked further down in the post's of this forum. You would see that I'm in Rabat right now. Went to the embassy Friday 18SEP2009 for issuing the Visa for Mauritania. Staying at Grand Hotel until Tuesday, where I will pick up the Visa at 3 o'clock. Why it takes so long, was because of Ramadan. Once I have in hand, I will start heading down south, taking a week or two to get the final experiences of Morocco. Would like to see the coast and Mountains.

PS: I paid 360 Dirhams for the Mauritanian Visa. On Chris Scott's page it says 200. Either they ripped me, or Chris might update his site. Otherwise thanks for great info on your site. Hope to meet you some day.

Anybody knows the time to get a Mali Visa in Rabat, is it still possible down in Nouakchott?

All the best and good luck

Just a quicky almost at the mauri border now. visa in rabat was in by 10.30 am on wednesday and back 2.30 pm thursday - recommend early application as they appear to cloe in middle of day. visa cost 340 dirham each. try to specify your start and end date - they try to get visa to start on day you apply and only lasts one month. we managed to get 6 weeks for price of 4 still started on day of application though. make sure you avoid friday as things shut down - fridays often closed everywhere in morocco or very limited - not just ramadan we understand.

hate this keyboard - hope all is clear and good luck

Yes, you can get a Mali visa in NKCT easily, go at 9am, ask nicely, and you can have it the same day (midday?) usually.

Got a Mauri visa at the border on 19.09.09 for €20, seems its only valid for 3 days though.

panderingpeter 14 Oct 2009 11:05

And is it possible to extend it at Nouadhibou police station?

Kevin 14 Oct 2009 17:14

Suppose so in NDB, definitley in Nouakchott, no idea of prices.

Hi Xander (or anyone else),
How is the safety situation in Mauritania?

We're getting a bit spooked by the Aus & British Foreign Consulate warnings.

Any news welcome.

Take care.

roamingyak 18 Oct 2009 21:53

Is the campsite in Sale still open for those going to Rabat for a visa?

Matt Roach 20 Oct 2009 23:52

I second Roaming Yak. Mali visa is available in Noukchott on the same day, if you ask nicely.
