Mauritania : Transit or Entended/Multi Entry Visa ?

We'll be passing theough Mauritania enroute for Ghana and I am wondering whether we should get a transit visa at the border and just drive on to Mali, or is it worth getting an extended/multi entry visa in Casablanca and take our time.
We don't plan to go off piste and as our main interest is in sub-saharian countries and I'm not sure if it is worth the detour to Casablanca and the hassle.

Any advice welcome
Thanks
Ian

I think it is worth to stay in Mauritania, if you just do the Atlantic route there is not much to see. I was there this summer and I enjoyed the Atar region, but especially the old beach piste. Also the road to Kiffa was very nice. I would recommend getting the visa before, stay a little bit longer and then cross the border not in Rosso with all the hassle but take the new asphalt road from Ayoun el Atrous. No hassle there and asphalt until Dakar.
