Mauritania-Morocco border closed

Hi,

As far as the Mauritanian consulate in Casablanca told us this afternoon is the border between Morocco and Mauritania closed for the moment. They also gave back our 100 Dh and passports which we left there this morning with the message that for the moment no visa's are granted. The consul could not tell us when they would write out visa's again.

Has anybody who is now in Mauritania more information on the situation there for travellers ?

Greetings from Casablanca,

Hans

Hi Bernardo,

We call the Mauritanian embassy every day as we would like to move on as soon as possible and there are not so many alternatives than going through Mauritania.

Yesterday they still did not issue visa's and did not want to give any indication when they would, but they started to accept applications again which makes us hope that the situation will be solved soon. We will see this afternoon. We will also start calling to the embassy in Rabat as Casablanca did not seem so certain anymore if the border was still closed or not.

I will post a message on the board if the embassy has confirmed us that visa's are issued again and that the border is open. As we are now in Marrakesh we will see if it is worth to backtrack to Casa or if we will get the Mauritanian visa at the border where it costs 5 times more (the consul confirmed that if they are issued there they cost 500Dhs).

Greetings,

Hans

Hi,

Good news ! The problems after the Mauritanian coup have apparently solved quicker than expected and today we got our Mauritanian visa in the Consulate of Casablanca. They also said that the border would be open again. We are now heading straight south and hope to get through in the following days.

Take also notice that the embassy in Rabat no longer gives visa; you can only get them at the consulate in Casablanca. See my other message wiht details about this.

Greetings from Casa,

Hans

Thanks hansrossel,

Those are really good news.

Are you going to cross Mauritania? Do you know when do you have access to a computer again?

I would like to know how every thing is going in Mauritania after the coup. Not what we read in the newspapers but what you will live there.

Is if save again to travel in Mauritania?

Arrived in Nouhadibou from Maroc the other day; the border is very sleepy, but not closed, plenty of Cibercafes in N. slow but functional, everyone including military very chilled. pas de probleme so far.
