Mauritania/Mali crossing
 

Can anyone give me any up-to-date info on the crossings Ayoun to Nioro and Néma to Nara? I'm particularly interested in crossing times/piste quality(end-Oct/beginning-Nov)/border hassles etc.

Hi,
Ayoun-Nioro is new (last year) tarmac apart from a couple of hundred meters each end.
Nioro - Diema - Didieni is very poor, but ploughed (sorry, used) regularly by articulated lorries.

Police at Nioro tried it on but gave up pretty quickly as my arguing distracted them from the telly. The police and customs at Ayoun were very correct and friendly, no requests.

We spent the night just off the tar somewhere in between the two without any trouble.

Did Timbedra - Nara. Nice drive, deep ruts at times (axels dragged with 225/75's but never really bad). The route takes you trough some very nice villages. Didn't see police/Customs at the RIM side. On the Mali side we had thee and a friendly chat.
