It looks as though there has been a coup in Mauri this morning. See:

Well I can't see how it's going to affect the behaviour of the civil servants on the border posts, unless thay simply close the country.
My first reaction was "Oh no here we go again".
Is this the first time an Islamic state has been toppled?

According to Al Jezera news they are stopping people leaving the country and all main roads are blocked and no one is allowed to travel along them.

Sounds serious to me.

Bother,

Checking the Foriegn Office website - they have advised against all travel to Mauritania. That means that and UK travel insurance will not be valid.

So if you are in the UK sounds like - at the moment you are stuffed for going to Mauritania.

We're still planning to arrive in Mauri from W Sahara on around the 28th August. Hopefully by then things will have calmed down. Worst case we get turned away I guess.
Would be interested to hear from anyone out there at the moment or in the next few weeks for advice.

I was just told that some german tourists (and probably others) are blocked in Morocco because the Mauri border is closed. But no idea for how long.
